Literacy has always been a critical part of K-12 education. However — this generation of students faces additional challenges. School districts around the country are starting to report data on the impact the pandemic had on early childhood reading and the news is concerning. We are looking at the biggest drop in reading scores in over 30 years and are risking a generation of struggling readers. According to a seminal study conducted by researchers from the University of Nevada in 2010, it was found that in low-income neighborhoods, there was only one book available for every 300 children, while in middle-income neighborhoods, there were 13 books for every child.

We believe representation is paramount. Representation within children's books holds immense significance for BIPOC children. Seeing themselves reflected in the characters and stories they encounter is essential for fostering a sense of belonging, self-worth, and identity. When children are exposed to diverse and inclusive literature, it validates their experiences, cultures, and backgrounds. It broadens their perspectives, nurtures empathy, and promotes cross-cultural understanding. Representation in books provides BIPOC children with role models and inspiration, affirming that their dreams and aspirations are valid and achievable. By ensuring representation in children's literature, we empower BIPOC children to embrace their unique identities, build confidence, and envision a future where their voices are heard and valued.
